Windsurf — AI-powered coding agent platform and IDE
TL;DR

AI coding IDE, formerly from Codeium and now Cognition's Devin Desktop, helping developers build faster with natural language programming.

Key Points

  • ✓AI-powered IDE, formerly from Codeium, where developers describe intentions in natural language and an agent generates and edits code
  • ✓OpenAI's roughly $3B acquisition deal collapsed in July 2025; Google paid $2.4B to license the technology and hire the CEO, and Cognition acquired the rest of Windsurf
  • ✓Cognition reported $82M ARR and 350+ enterprise customers at acquisition; in June 2026 it renamed Windsurf to Devin Desktop
  • ✓Enables marketers to build custom automation bots, analytics dashboards, and content tools without extensive coding knowledge

Windsurf is an AI-powered coding agent platform and Integrated Development Environment (IDE) for code generation, editing, and agent orchestration. It was built by the startup formerly known as Codeium 2, and since July 2025 it has been owned by Cognition, the maker of the Devin coding agent 1. In June 2026 Cognition renamed the product Devin Desktop, keeping Windsurf's editor and adding a command center for managing multiple agents 3.

How Windsurf Works

Windsurf supports what developers call "vibe coding": you describe what you want in natural language, and the AI agent writes and edits the corresponding code, which makes rapid prototyping much faster. Its built-in agent was called Cascade. This natural language approach also lets marketers and other non-developers build simple tools, although production code still needs review by someone who can read it.

Windsurf lets users work with models from several providers rather than a single vendor. Devin Desktop extends this: it supports the Agent Client Protocol, so agents such as OpenAI Codex, Claude Agent and OpenCode can run inside the same editor, and Devin Local replaces Cascade as the default local agent 3 4.

Ownership History

Windsurf became one of the most contested companies in AI coding in 2025 2:

  • OpenAI agreed to buy Windsurf, but the deal collapsed in July 2025, partly over concerns that Microsoft would gain access to Windsurf's intellectual property through its OpenAI relationship.
  • Google then licensed Windsurf's technology and hired CEO Varun Mohan, co-founder Douglas Chen and some engineers. Google did not acquire the company.
  • Cognition acquired the rest of Windsurf, including its IP, product, trademark, brand and team, and promoted Jeff Wang to CEO.

At the time of the acquisition, Cognition said Windsurf had $82M of annual recurring revenue, more than 350 enterprise customers and hundreds of thousands of daily active users 1.

Devin Desktop

On June 2, 2026, Windsurf was renamed Devin Desktop through a standard over-the-air update. The default screen became an Agent Command Center, a Kanban-style view for managing local and cloud agents, while the full IDE stays available. Cognition says existing plans, pricing, extensions and settings carried over unchanged, and legacy Cascade support ran until July 1, 2026 3. The Devin Desktop site states plainly that "Devin Desktop is the new name for Windsurf" 4.

Applications in Social Media Marketing

For social media marketing professionals, Windsurf accelerates the development of custom content tools and automation solutions. Marketers use AI editors like it to create:

  • Custom automation bots for scheduling posts across multiple platforms
  • Analytics dashboards tailored to specific campaign metrics
  • AI-driven personalization engines for content optimization
  • Instagram Reels editors and TikTok trend analyzers

This "roll your own" approach lets marketers prototype tools quickly, such as AI caption generators connected to a publishing API. Because Windsurf and Devin Desktop can connect to MCP servers, an agent in the editor can also call external tools directly.

Best Practices and Implementation Tips

Keep model flexibility: Use the ability to switch models and agents to avoid lock-in, especially given how often ownership and products have changed in this market.

Validate before you rely on it: "Vibe coding" makes prototypes cheap, but stress-test them with real workloads, watch usage costs, and have a developer review anything that handles credentials, customer data or live publishing.

Fit it into existing workflows: Windsurf is built on the VS Code editor foundation, so most VS Code extensions and keybindings carry over, which lowers the switching cost for teams that already use VS Code.

Upskill the team: Train marketing team members in prompt engineering so they can describe tasks precisely, and bring in experienced developers for complex fixes and optimizations.

Challenges and Considerations

The Windsurf story shows how quickly AI coding tools consolidate: in little more than a year the product changed owners and then changed names. Teams that build internal tools on any AI editor should keep their code in standard repositories, avoid depending on features unique to one product, and review pricing and data terms after each ownership or product change.

Future Outlook

Alternatives such as Cursor, GitHub Copilot and Claude Code compete in the same space. For social media marketing teams, the practical takeaway is to evaluate long-term platform stability before making significant investments in custom tools, while taking advantage of how accessible natural language programming has made custom solutions for content creation, analytics, and campaign management.
